Almost 70 percent of the male population suffers from gynecomastia at some point in their lives. For some, it may disappear after a few months or years but in some people are not so lucky. Severe gynecomastia can occur at any age. It is a very severe form of gynecomastia where male breasts can become as large as C or D cup size which is comparable to that of female breasts. Men suffering from severe gynecomastia also suffer from depression and body image issues. A lot of them try to limit their social exposure. A lot of males suffering from severe gynecomastia resort to wearing bras to hide it and avoid going to places where they might have to reveal their torso.
Ina lot of cases, gynecomastia cures itself. Sometimes even medication is very effective in getting rid of gynecomastia in males. However in a lot of cases, surgery is the only resolution. When medicines do not work for more than two years, surgery is the only way to get rid of gynecomastia. Severe gynecomastia can wreak havoc on a person’s mental well-being.
Surgical treatment of severe gynecomastia
In cases where obesity is the cause of severe gynecomastia, skin excisions are required which may lead to scarring. Male breast reduction surgery leaves behind scars. Modern technique allows surgeons to minimize the scars but there is no way to get rid of them completely. It is important that people visit trained and certified surgeons. The surgeon will discuss every aspect with the patient before going ahead with the surgery and also explain about scarring and recovery. It is always better to go for counselling before going for surgery or any other procedure like male areola reduction.
Many males who suffer from severe gynecomastia have male breast ptosis which is also called drooping breasts. In this case, areola lies under the lower edge of the pectoral chest muscles. This is a result of aging, loss of muscle mass or weight loss. In case of excess skin, breast liposuction and excision of the gland may not be sufficient. A procedure called mastopexy may be required. Breast skin excision is done in this. Teenagers suffering from severe gynecomastia can get excision done at a younger age. Any kind of gynecomastia leaves emotional scars but severe gynecomastia is much more devastating.
